Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
